Comorbidities in Older Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Comorbidities in Older Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Various daily struggles come with aging. Older adults tend to experience physical decline that may require them to acquire adult care. Aging already brings with it different comorbidities, such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, among others.

However, aging can be more difficult for people with developmental disabilities. As a provider of disability care in California, we notice that this is the case for older adults with an autism spectrum disorder or ASD.

According to the National Autism Association here are some comorbidities that people with ASD experience at higher rates:

  • Epilepsy
  • Autoimmune conditions
  • Vision or Hearing Impairments
  • Dyslipidemia
  • Gastrointestinal conditions

People with ASD often have problems communicating their symptoms. We certainly notice that this is the case among some of our clients, due in part to our providing of residential care in Perris, California. That is why taking care of patients with ASD can be more challenging.

Living with elderly loved ones with ASD can be challenging. Sometimes, you will need to take care of your own needs. That is why we, at Magellan Residential Care, a leading provider of respite care, can help you take care of those you love for the times you need to take care of yourself.
